Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, Mongomo, Minor basilica in Mongomo, Equatorial Guinea.
The Basilica of the Immaculate Conception is the largest religious structure in Central Africa, located in the center of Mongomo. It accommodates around one thousand worshippers and features a modern interior design.
Construction was completed in 2011 by Italian companies Makinen Venture and Ruffini Decorazioni after five years of development. The official consecration took place later that same year.
Inside the basilica stands a replica of Esperanza Macarena from Seville, showing the connection between Spanish and Equatorial Guinean Catholic traditions. This statue reflects how religious devotion is shared across these two nations.
The basilica is easy to find since it sits in the center of Mongomo and stands out as a notable building. Visitors should know that it is most crowded during regular worship services.
Cardinal Francis Arinze from Nigeria led the consecration ceremony, which brought together around two hundred priests and several bishops. This internationally attended celebration shows the significance of the place beyond the region.
