Musée National des Arts et Traditions du Gabon, Art museum in Libreville, Gabon.
The National Museum of Arts and Traditions of Gabon holds about 2500 objects from the daily life of the country's peoples. The collection includes baskets, cooking vessels, musical instruments, carved figures, and masks that show how communities here lived and worked.
The museum was founded in 1963 and relocated to its present building a few years later. This move allowed the growing collection to be displayed in a more suitable space.
The collections represent how more than 40 ethnic groups of Gabon expressed their identity through handcrafted objects and daily practices. The displayed items show the different ways people here worked, celebrated, and passed down their traditions through generations.
The museum occupies an administrative building in the city center and is open on most weekdays. Allow a few hours to walk through the collections at a comfortable pace.
Behind the building lies a botanical garden with one hundred local plant species that reflect the region's natural environment. In addition, the institution maintains an audio archive holding over one thousand recorded interviews and musical pieces.
