Fort Real de São Filipe
Fort Real de São Filipe, Military fort in Cidade Velha, Cape Verde.
The fortress rises 120 meters above sea level on a plateau, featuring three bastions directed toward the island's interior and steep protective cliffs.
Portuguese engineers constructed the fort between 1587 and 1593 following attacks by Francis Drake, using stones transported from Portugal for its walls.
The fort contains multiple internal structures including a chapel of São Gonçalo, military storage areas, a Governor's residence, and garrison quarters.
The fortress opens its gates to visitors every day from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM, allowing exploration of its historical structures and defense systems.
This fortification forms part of an extensive defense network that included six additional coastal forts and protective walls around the port area.
