Museu Etnográfico da Praia, Ethnographic museum in Plateau district, Praia, Cape Verde.
Museu Etnográfico da Praia is an ethnographic museum housed in a 19th-century colonial building on Rua 5 de Julho. Inside are traditional objects, tools, and everyday items that document life across four Cape Verdean islands.
The museum opened its doors in October 1997 and preserves items recovered from local shipwrecks. These maritime finds, along with farming equipment, illustrate Cape Verde's deep connection to seafaring and agriculture.
The collection shows pottery, textiles, and baskets that reflect the craftsmanship of four Cape Verdean islands. These objects reveal how people on Santiago, Santo Antão, Boavista, and Brava shaped their everyday lives and work.
The ground floor is accessible Monday through Friday during two time slots. Visiting in the morning is helpful, and checking hours in advance avoids disappointment.
The collection includes specialized equipment for Kankan tobacco processing and traditional milling devices from Cape Verdean farming. These rare tools reveal production methods developed uniquely on the islands.
