Limassol Zoo, zoo in Cyprus

Limassol Zoo is a 0.6-hectare zoo in Limassol's Municipal Park, founded in 1956 and reopened on 1 June 2012 after restructuring. It holds about 90 species of mammals, birds and reptiles, including flamingos, emus, llamas, meerkats and Cuban iguanas. The grounds have shaded paths, benches, a children's playground and the Flamingo Cafe by the bird aviary.

Limassol Zoo was officially founded in 1956, after a monkey was donated to the city's public park in 1954. An American, John Wilkes, brought the elephant Julia from Singapore Zoo, and Tel Aviv gave a female bear in 1961, the same year Washington's Smithsonian National Zoological Park sent pairs of raccoons and opossums. In the 1990s the lion pair Simba and Messalina bred there, and cubs born in Limassol went to South Africa. After protests by naturalists, animals were transferred to other zoos and the garden was restructured, reopening on 1 June 2012 on 0.6 hectares.

The zoo is located near the Municipal Gallery bus stop on Vyronos Avenue and is accessible by public transport including bus 30, with the entrance found within the park rather than directly from the street. Walking through all enclosures takes about 30 minutes, though visits last longer when traveling with children who want to spend time watching the animals.
