Mokil Atoll, Coral atoll municipality in Pohnpei State, Federated States of Micronesia
Mokil Atoll comprises three main islands - Uhrek, Kahlap, and Mwandohn - arranged in a rectangular shape around a central lagoon. The entire formation creates a typical coral atoll ecosystem with shallow islands and protective reef structures.
A ship captain sailing through the area gave the atoll the name Wellington Island during the early period of European exploration. This name from that contact period reflects how the region became connected to wider global routes.
The people living on Kahlap island keep traditional practices alive through fishing and farming methods handed down over time. These daily activities shape how the community interacts with their surroundings and each other.
Reaching the atoll requires traveling by boat or chartering a flight to the small runway on Kahlap island. Visitors should plan for limited services and bring basic supplies from outside.
Of the three islands only Kahlap remains inhabited while the other two are completely empty. This concentration of the entire population on a single island makes it an unusual settlement pattern in the region.
