Satawan, Pacific atoll municipality in Chuuk State, Federated States of Micronesia.
Satawan is an atoll municipality in Chuuk State with a spacious lagoon and several small islands scattered across the area. The inhabited archipelago comprises four separate municipalities with a combined land area of roughly 5 square kilometers.
The island group was occupied by Japanese military forces during World War II, who established a military base on the main island. After the war ended, the territory came under United States administration and eventually became part of the Federated States of Micronesia.
The municipality operates under its own constitution, with local leadership selected through elections of mayors and deputy mayors by island residents.
Access to the islands relies on cargo ships departing from Pohnpei or Weno, which provide the main transportation link for visitors and residents. Plan for extended travel times and ensure flexible scheduling due to the remote location and irregular service frequency.
During low tide, residents and visitors can walk across the exposed reef to reach the neighboring island of Ta, creating a temporary land bridge between settlements. This natural passage reflects the close relationship between the island communities and their surrounding waters.
