Dakataua, Volcanic caldera on Willaumez Peninsula, Papua New Guinea
The Dakataua caldera measures 13.5 kilometers east to west and 10.5 kilometers north to south, containing a horseshoe-shaped lake 73 meters above sea level.
The caldera formation occurred approximately 1150 years ago, with the most recent volcanic activity recorded at Mount Makalia in 1895.
Local tribes maintain connections to the volcanic region through traditional practices and stories about the migo creature inhabiting the lake's depths.
The caldera lake spans 48 square kilometers with a maximum depth of 120 meters, requiring careful navigation and proper equipment for exploration.
Despite the size and depth of the alkaline caldera lake, scientists have documented no fish species living in its waters.
