Coastwatchers Memorial Lighthouse

Coastwatchers Memorial Lighthouse, Memorial lighthouse and monument in Madang Province, Papua New Guinea.

The Coastwatchers Memorial Lighthouse is a monument in Madang Province built in 1959 and still serves ships at sea today with its light signals. The white tower stands 28 meters tall and sends out flashes visible from considerable distances.

The lighthouse was built in 1959 and remembers soldiers who watched Japanese ships from occupied islands during World War II. These observers played an important role in supporting the Allies across the Pacific.

The site honors observers from Australia and America who gathered and shared information during World War II. Visitors can sense the connection to these men who worked from remote islands to support the Allied effort.

The structure is located on the coast and easy to reach from central Madang, making it possible to visit before or after exploring the town. The site offers open access for visitors who want to see the monument and enjoy the views.

The lighthouse still functions as an active navigation aid for ships today, not only as a historical memorial on land. This double purpose makes it a rare example of a war memorial that continues to serve practical use at sea.
