Sir John Guise Stadium, Sports stadium in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea

Sir John Guise Stadium is a sports venue in Port Moresby with a natural grass playing surface, seating areas, media facilities, and modern lighting that accommodate athletic events and football matches. The facility includes locker rooms, player amenities, administrative offices, hospitality areas, and press accommodations designed to serve up to 15,000 spectators.

The stadium opened in 1991 for the South Pacific Games, with an original capacity of about 5,000. After Papua New Guinea was chosen on 27 September 2009 to host the 2015 Pacific Games, it was rebuilt: seating rose to 15,000, an IAAF-certified track was installed, and new lighting, scoreboard and media facilities were added. It reopened on 12 June 2015 with a Queensland Cup rugby league match between the PNG Hunters and Souths Logan Magpies.

The stadium is named after Sir John Guise (1914–1991), the first Governor-General of Papua New Guinea. It hosted the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2015 Pacific Games, and in 2016 it staged all matches of the OFC Nations Cup, which doubled as qualification for the 2017 Confederations Cup and the 2018 World Cup.

The stadium sits within the Sir John Guise Sports Precinct in Port Moresby, alongside an indoor arena, beach volleyball and hockey court, and an aquatics centre. The venue was rebuilt for the 2015 Pacific Games with seating raised from about 5,000 to 15,000 and an IAAF-certified athletics track. Events are ticketed and held on the running track or the grass field, so check which stand your seat is in before travelling.

The stadium was financed by the Chinese government, as the German Wikipedia notes, and horse races were once held there before it became a football ground. It was named after John Guise (1914–1991), the first Governor-General of Papua New Guinea.
