YUS Conservation Area

The YUS Conservation Area extends across 75,000 hectares of diverse ecosystems, from coral reefs to cloud forests in the western Saruwaged Mountains.

The conservation area received official recognition in 2009 through collaboration between local landowners, the Papua New Guinea government, and international conservation organizations.

Thirty-five villages within the region maintain traditional land management practices while participating in environmental protection through a complete ban on hunting and logging.

A dedicated team of twelve rangers conducts regular patrols and mapping activities to monitor wildlife populations and enforce conservation regulations throughout the protected zone.

The area provides sanctuary to 268 bird species, 44 mammal species, and 26 frog species, including the endemic Matschie's tree kangaroo.
