Sorol, Coral atoll in Yap State, Federated States of Micronesia
Sorol is an atoll in Yap State composed of nine islands arranged around a shallow lagoon basin. The islands form a natural coral ring that encloses the central water body.
A Spanish navigator encountered the atoll during a mid-16th century Pacific voyage and recorded its location in maritime records. Human settlement and activity on these islands have been documented at various points over several centuries.
The atoll maintains strong connections to Yapese traditions, with local communities historically practicing maritime navigation and resource management according to ancestral methods.
Reaching the atoll requires advance planning and specialized transportation from Yap's main islands. The area has been uninhabited for several decades, so no regular services or infrastructure exist for visitors.
The atoll is home to a variety of reptile species including multiple gecko and skink types that have adapted to island life. These creatures are restricted to only a handful of Pacific atolls, making the location noteworthy for wildlife researchers.
