Pearls Airport, Former airport in Grenville, Grenada
Pearls Airport was an air facility with a 5,200-foot runway and a simple cinder block terminal building. The installation sat about 40 feet (12 m) above sea level in the northeastern corner of the island.
The facility was established in 1943 and served as a base for Allied aircraft during World War II. It later handled civilian flights until 1984, when a modern replacement airport opened elsewhere on the island.
For decades, the airport served as a connection point for residents traveling to neighboring Caribbean islands and was central to regional travel patterns.
The former airport site is accessible for visitors interested in aviation history and can be explored on foot. The grounds remain open, though there are no formal facilities or guided tours available.
Two military aircraft from a 1983 military action remain displayed on the grounds as remnants of a significant historical moment. The former runway now hosts drag racing events, giving the old landing strip an entirely different purpose.
