Burhou, Bird sanctuary island near Alderney, Channel Islands
Burhou is a small island off Alderney in the Channel Islands, measuring roughly half a mile long and 400 yards wide. Its northeastern section features a raised beach, while the rest of the island is covered with rabbit burrows and low vegetation.
Two standing stones were discovered on the island in 1847, suggesting ancient settlement. Archaeological finds like flint fragments indicate that people visited this place in prehistoric times.
The island maintains strict regulations to protect puffin colonies, prohibiting visitors from landing between March 15 and August 1 each year.
The island can only be reached with permission from the Alderney Harbour Office arranged in advance. A basic shelter on the island offers limited overnight accommodation, so visitors should expect simple conditions.
Puffins on the island nest inside rabbit burrows rather than digging their own holes. This unusual arrangement shows how two different species share the same ground.
