Hauteville House, Biographical museum in Saint Peter Port, Guernsey
Hauteville House is a four-story Victorian mansion in Saint Peter Port featuring oak paneling, antique tapestries, and a glass-enclosed lookout. The rooms are filled with personal furnishings and objects that create a sense of how life unfolded within these walls.
The house was purchased in 1856 and transformed into a home during a fifteen-year exile from France. Major literary works were created here during this period of residence.
The dining room displays Dutch tiles and a monumental fireplace decorated with a ceramic double H. These rooms also feature an ancestor chair with metal chains, reflecting the personal connections and family memories of the former resident.
The house spans multiple levels with stairs connecting them, so comfortable shoes are recommended for exploring. The rooms are furnished with information that helps visitors understand the history and objects on display.
The top floor served as a private workspace where the view over the harbor influenced the work created there. Visitors can see this personal space and understand how the surrounding environment shaped what was written within these walls.
