Little Chapel, Catholic chapel in Saint Andrew, Guernsey
The Little Chapel is a tiny place of worship in Saint Andrew whose interior and exterior walls are covered with shells, pebbles, and broken china pieces. These materials coat nearly every surface, creating a dense, shimmering mosaic across the structure.
A French brother named Déodat built the chapel in 1914 as a personal project on Guernsey. After two reconstructions, the current version reflects his faith and craftsman skills.
The chapel reproduces sacred places dedicated to Mary, showing how a small community expressed their faith through handcrafted decoration and personal devotion.
The building is so narrow that only a few people can enter at the same time, meaning wait times during busy periods. It helps to visit during quieter hours and treat it respectfully as an active place of prayer.
Brother Déodat gathered tiny objects like shell pieces and broken china from the surrounding area and worked them all into the design. His handiwork used materials that others overlooked to create something special.
