Fort Hommet 10.5 cm Coastal Defence Gun Casement Bunker

Fort Hommet is a German coastal defense bunker in Castel featuring a 10.5 cm gun casemate with multiple internal chambers for ammunition, crew living space, and protective ventilation. The structure has been restored to show visitors the original World War II military design and engineering.

German forces constructed this fortification between 1940 and 1945 as part of the Atlantic Wall defense strategy for occupied Channel Islands. The installation was one of many similar structures ordered to protect coastal areas against potential Allied invasions.

The bunker serves as a learning space where visitors encounter preserved military equipment and gain insight into how German forces occupied the Channel Islands during the war. You can see the weapons and tools that soldiers used in their daily routines on the island.

The bunker sits on a headland overlooking Vazon Bay and opens for visitors on two afternoons per week from April through October. When planning your visit, check opening times in advance and note that access involves stairs and narrow interior passages.

This installation is one of 21 similar structures on Guernsey and retains many original design elements from the wartime period. The preserved gun and technical systems demonstrate the engineering quality that German forces applied to coastal defense bunkers.
