Sausmarez Manor, Historic manor house in Saint Martin, Guernsey
Sausmarez Manor is a granite manor house in Saint Martin, Guernsey, built across several phases and combining Tudor, Queen Anne, and Victorian architectural styles into one layered structure. The estate grounds include gardens, a sculpture park, and recreational facilities for visitors.
The property is first recorded in 1117 and stayed with the de Sausmarez family across many generations. The different building styles visible in the house reflect a series of changes carried out from medieval times through to the 19th century.
A sculpture park on the grounds displays contemporary artworks set among subtropical plants and old stone garden features. The works are woven into the landscape itself, so art and nature are experienced side by side.
The estate is easy to reach on foot or by car and sits on mostly flat ground, making it accessible for most visitors. Allow a couple of hours to walk through the house, the gardens, and the sculpture displays at a comfortable pace.
The estate runs the only railway on Guernsey, a small train that takes visitors on a ride through the grounds. Having a working railway on a private estate is a very rare feature anywhere in the British Isles.
