Kentur Lokon, Stratovolcano in Tomohon City, Indonesia
Kentur Lokon is a stratovolcano near Tomohon that rises 1,580 meters above the Tondano plain. The mountain features two main peaks with a flat summit area between them, where the active Tompaluan crater lies.
The volcano has been active since 1375 with several documented eruptions. A major event in 1991 resulted in the death of a Swiss hiker and caused local evacuations.
The mountain's name means Mountain of Rice Fields, reflecting the agricultural traditions of communities in North Sulawesi who live in the fertile plains below. The terraced fields and cultivated lands shape the landscape around the volcano.
The hiking trail begins from Tomohon at about 800 meters elevation and follows a path along an old lava flow to the crater. The route takes around three hours, so starting early and checking local conditions beforehand is wise.
The summit holds a cement survey marker of Dutch construction that stands at the peak. On clear days, visitors can see Gunung Klabat, the Bunaken islands, and Mount Soputan volcano from this vantage point.
