Ruang is a stratovolcano in the Sangihe Islands arc between North Sulawesi and Mindanao, rising 725 meters above sea level. It marks the southernmost point of this active volcanic chain and displays the cone-shaped structure typical of this volcano type.
A major eruption in 1871 triggered a tsunami that destroyed villages on Tagulandang island and took many lives. The disaster also caused extensive damage to plantations in the region, reshaping the landscape and local economy.
Local residents call both the island and volcano Duang, a name reflecting deep ties to the land passed down through generations. The mountain remains woven into the daily life and beliefs of communities who have lived here for centuries.
From Manado, take a speedboat to Tagulandang island, then a local fishing boat to reach the community near the volcano. Plan multiple days for travel and exploration, as the journey involves boat changes and time on the water.
A crater about 500 meters wide sits at the summit with depths ranging from 50 to 100 meters, enclosed by intricate ravines. Maleo birds nest within these ravines, a rare species found only on select islands in this part of the world.
