Monaco Grand Prix, Formula 1 race in Monaco
This event takes place annually on the public streets of Monte Carlo and is a major part of the Formula 1 World Championship. The track winds through narrow streets, past the harbor and through the city center, with some sections barely wider than the cars themselves.
The first race took place in 1929 and is among the oldest motor racing competitions in the world. Since then it has remained a fixture on the international racing calendar, hosting generations of drivers.
The event draws the wealthy and famous who gather in cafes and grandstands throughout the district. The closed streets become the center of global attention, where luxury yachts and high-end cars line the harbor and streets.
Weather handling, particularly in the days leading up to the race, can be unpredictable since the narrow streets wet quickly. Visitors should arrive early and come several days before the event if they want to find viewing spots, as many locations fill with spectators fast.
It is the only race where the track is not specially built but instead uses normal city streets that are temporarily closed for the event. This makes it unusually difficult for drivers because they have no free run-off areas and testing opportunities like on other permanent racing circuits.
