Japanese Garden, Japanese garden in Larvotto, Monaco
The Japanese Garden is an urban park in Monaco that arranges diverse landscape features including a mountain, waterfall, stream, and Zen garden across 0.7 hectares near the Mediterranean shore. The grounds rise at different levels with carefully placed pathways and areas for sitting and viewing.
The garden was commissioned in 1994 by Prince Rainier III and landscape architect Yasuo Beppu created an authentic Japanese design for the site. The project followed the Prince's visit to a flower exhibition in Osaka, which inspired him to undertake this ambitious undertaking.
The garden brings together Japanese traditions through stone lanterns, bridges, and a tea house that guide visitors into a slower pace of observation. These elements create spaces where you naturally pause to notice the carefully arranged details around you.
The garden sits on Avenue Princesse Grace next to Grimaldi Forum and welcomes visitors each day at no cost. The best time to visit is early morning when there are fewer people and the light falls beautifully across the landscape.
Mediterranean plants such as pine, olive, and pomegranate trees receive Japanese-style pruning, creating a blend of European and Asian horticultural methods. This unexpected fusion produces something you would not encounter elsewhere.
