Bregenz

Bregenz is the capital of Vorarlberg on the eastern shore of Lake Constance, with the Pfänder mountain rising behind the old town. The town stretches between the lakeshore and the mountain slope, connecting the flat waterfront with the steep hills beyond.

The settlement began around 1500 BC and later grew into the Roman military camp Brigantium. In 50 AD, the camp received the status of a municipal town under Roman administration.

The lake stage hosts opera performances during the summer festival, attracting audiences from across Europe. The floating set changes every two years, rebuilt entirely for each new production.

The town can be explored on foot, with the area between the old town and the lakefront particularly easy to reach. From the train station, you can walk to the waterfront promenade in a few minutes and explore the different neighborhoods from there.

The Kunsthaus consists of a glass cube whose translucent facade reflects daylight differently throughout the day. The building changes its appearance depending on the position of the sun and weather conditions, looking slightly different with each visit.
