Vienna General Hospital, Municipal hospital in Alsergrund, Austria
Vienna General Hospital is a university medical center in Alsergrund with two connected towers that rise above the campus grounds. The facility operates with more than 1,700 beds and employs thousands of medical staff who work across its many departments and research areas.
The hospital was founded in 1686 when Dr. Johann Franckh donated land to establish a military medical facility following the second siege of Vienna. Over the centuries it grew into one of Europe's leading medical centers with continuous expansions and updates to its buildings and services.
A synagogue from 1903 stands on the grounds and once served as a place of worship for Jewish patients receiving care here. The building reflects how faith and healing were connected for the community that used this hospital.
The hospital is easy to reach by public transport, with the Michelbeuern/AKH metro station on line U6 located directly at the entrance. Visitors should find out the specific location of the department or clinic they need beforehand, as the campus is large and can take time to navigate.
The grounds include the Narrenturm building from 1784, one of the first structures designed specifically to care for patients with mental illness. Its circular design was groundbreaking for medical architecture at that time.
