Übergossene Alm, Alpine glacier in Werfen, Austria.
Übergossene Alm is a glacier on the north face of Hochkönig mountain, sitting at roughly 2700 meters elevation. The ice field spreads across several kilometers and forms a white expanse within the high alpine terrain.
The glacier was considerably larger in 1888 and covered a much greater area. Since then, it has continuously melted and shrunk substantially.
The glacier forms a natural watershed between springs flowing through Blühnbachtal and Werfen into Salzach River, and Urslau tributaries draining into Saalach River.
This glacier is only reachable for experienced mountaineers and requires proper equipment and local guidance. Summer offers the most stable conditions and the most accessible routes to the ice field.
The glacier has fractured into three separate sections, and the western portion displays a distinctive tongue-shaped form that stretches down the mountainside. This fragmentation allows direct views of the layered ice and how it moves across the terrain.
