Wildalmkirchl

Wildalmkirchl is a mountain summit on the southern edge of the Steinernes Meer, rising to 2,578 meters with prominent limestone formations covering its peak. The terrain is steep and jagged, with exposed rock faces that stand out sharply against the sky.

The name comes from Wildalm, a remote high valley to the north, combined with 'kirchl' because the mountain's shape resembles a church. This naming reflects how mountain slopes were compared to familiar structures in earlier times.

Local mountaineers established multiple climbing routes to reach the summit, with the northeastern path becoming the standard approach for experienced climbers.

Reaching Wildalmkirchl requires technical climbing skills, particularly across the exposed Kirchdachgrat arête leading to the summit block. A shelter hut at 2,457 meters northeast of the peak offers basic refuge with eight sleeping spots for mountain expeditions.

The summit is recognizable from a distance by its sharp, church-like silhouette, which sets it apart from other peaks in the area. This distinctive shape made it historically useful as a landmark for climbers navigating the region.
