Schottenkirche

The Schottenkirche is a parish church in central Vienna with Baroque architecture, multiple chapels, and elaborate decorations throughout. Its high altar was designed in the 1880s and remains a striking focal point inside.

Irish Benedictine monks founded the church in the 12th century at the duke's invitation. After fires and collapses, it was rebuilt in the 17th century and has retained its basic structure since then.

The church served as a musical center for centuries, hosting performances and attracting composers who contributed to Vienna's artistic life. Walking through it today, you can sense how deeply music remains woven into the space.

The church is easy to reach from Freyung square and welcomes visitors into its interior spaces. Classical concerts are held regularly, and the surrounding square offers plenty of places to explore the neighborhood.

Despite its name referring to Scottish monks, it was actually founded and run by Irish Benedictines. This historical mix-up has stuck in the name ever since.
