The village was originally part of the nearby municipality of Grödig before becoming independent in 1895. The village carries a name with Illyrian roots, suggesting a very long history of settlement. Today it is marked by its connection to classical music and the legacy of the Salzburg Festival, visible in the presence of historic figures and their residences throughout the village.
The village is easily reached by bus from Salzburg and serves as a quiet base for day trips to the city and nearby attractions. Visitors will find accommodations in hotels, can use the Waldbad for swimming, and have access to hiking trails on the Untersberg.
The renowned conductor Herbert von Karajan lived in Anif for many years and is buried in the village cemetery next to the Romanesque church. Wasserschloss Anif was later used as a filming location for 'The Sound of Music', shaping the place's worldwide image.
