Großer Priel

Grosser Priel is a mountain peak in the Totes Gebirge reaching 2,515 meters, distinguished by a white northern face that dominates views across the Almtal region. The limestone summit is accessed via established hiking trails that connect two mountain huts serving as base points for the ascent.

The limestone forming the mountain contains fossilized corals from a tropical sea that covered the area around 200 million years ago. This geological history reveals that the region lay submerged beneath the ocean before gradually rising to become the Alpine terrain we see today.

The mountain has long drawn climbers from surrounding areas who ascend via marked routes starting from the mountain huts. The stark white rock faces have become a defining landmark that locals and visitors immediately recognize when looking toward the peaks.

The ascent demands solid fitness and proper hiking boots with good grip since sections include steep terrain and rocky ground. Plan your visit between late spring and early autumn when snow has melted and the trails are fully passable.

Snow patches linger on the slopes well into summer, creating a striking contrast with the green valleys below for weeks after lower elevations have thawed. The access road serving the area has restricted seasonal availability, making certain times of year more challenging for reaching the trailhead.
