Southern Limestone Alps, Mountain range in Carinthia and East Tyrol, Austria and Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Veneto, Trentino-South Tyrol, and Lombardy, Italy.

The Southern Limestone Alps form a mountain range that stretches across Austria and Italy, composed primarily of limestone and dolostone rock formations. The massif features numerous valleys, passes, and plateaus connected by ridges that create a complex three-dimensional landscape.

For millennia, this mountain range has formed a natural barrier between different cultures and powers competing for control of key alpine passes. The geography shaped where settlements developed and how people and goods moved between northern and southern regions of Europe.

These mountains shape daily life in the surrounding valleys, influencing how people farm and build their homes on the steep slopes. Local stone masons and builders continue traditions passed down through families who have adapted to living in this demanding terrain.

Access is provided through several mountain passes, and trails range from easy walks to challenging climbs suitable for different experience levels. The summer and early autumn months offer the best conditions for exploring, when higher elevation routes are generally free of snow.

Beneath this mountain range lies one of Europe's largest networks of caves and underground lakes, drawing cave divers and researchers from around the world. Some of these subterranean systems remain partially unexplored, continually revealing new geological features to scientists.
