Landsberger Hütte, Mountain hut in Tyrol, Austria
Landsberger Hütte is a mountain hut in the Allgäu Alps, set above the Vilsalpsee lake in the Tannheimer Valley in Tyrol. It offers beds in shared rooms along with self-catering facilities and connects directly to hiking trails that lead toward the surrounding peaks.
The hut was built in 1929 and expanded in 1966 to meet the growing number of walkers and climbers coming to the area. Its name comes from the German city of Landsberg am Lech, whose residents funded its construction.
The hut sits in the Tannheimer Valley, a area popular with walkers from both Austria and southern Germany, many of whom return year after year. Conversations at the shared tables often mix German and Bavarian dialects, giving the place a cross-border feel.
The hut can be reached on foot from several trails, with the most common starting point being the Vilsalpsee lake below. Starting early in the day is a good idea, since mountain weather can shift quickly and afternoon storms are common in summer.
From the hut's terrace, walkers can watch climbers making their way up the rock face of the Lachenspitze on a via ferrata route that is considered demanding even for experienced mountaineers. Many people use the hut as a base to attempt the route and return the same day.
