Traualpsee

Traualpsee, reservoir in Austria

Traualpsee is a small reservoir in the Allgau Alps at an elevation above 1600 meters (5249 feet). A dam completed in 1964 holds back the water for electricity generation, yet the basin retains a natural appearance with rocky shores, grassy edges, and a rectangular shape roughly 610 meters (2001 feet) long.

Originally a natural mountain basin, the lake was transformed into a reservoir in the 1960s when a dam was built to hold water for electricity production. The completion of this project in 1964 marked a shift toward using the high alpine area for energy supply while maintaining its natural character.

The name Traualpsee refers to the Traualpe, a traditional mountain pasture that has shaped this area. Visitors can see how local hiking trails and simple mountain huts reflect how people have lived and worked in harmony with this landscape for generations.

The area suits hikers of all levels, with well-maintained trails winding along the shoreline or climbing toward nearby mountain huts. The water is closed to swimming and water sports, but walking paths along the shore offer accessible ways to enjoy the location and rest during the day.

Visitors frequently spot hot air balloons, hang gliders, and paragliders soaring above the lake against the mountain backdrop. These aerial activities add an unexpected dynamic element to what otherwise feels like a quiet and contemplative alpine setting.
