Oberwalderhütte, Mountain hut in Heiligenblut, Austria.
The Oberwalderhütte is a mountain hut in Heiligenblut, Austria, set at around 2,973 feet (2,973 m) above sea level in the high alpine zone. It offers dormitory sleeping areas, a few smaller rooms, and a kitchen serving warm meals to mountaineers and hikers passing through.
The hut was built in 1910 by the Austrian Alpine Club to give mountaineers a fixed base in the Großglockner area. Since then it has been extended and updated several times, while keeping its role as a high-mountain shelter.
The hut sits inside the Hohe Tauern National Park and is a well-known starting point for routes toward the Großglockner, Austria's highest peak. Staying the night here means waking up at an altitude that few people ever reach on foot.
The hut is generally open from early June to early October, when snow and weather allow safe access on the trails. Booking a bed in advance is strongly advised, as space fills quickly during the peak summer weeks.
The hut sits too high for natural running water to be available nearby, so drinking water is delivered by helicopter on a regular basis. This small detail gives a sense of just how remote and exposed the location really is.
