Heiligenblut

Heiligenblut is a mountain village located near the Grossglockner, Austria's highest peak, in northwestern Carinthia. The settlement sits at approximately 1,300 meters elevation and is surrounded by hiking routes, ski areas, and the Hohe Tauern National Park.

A Danish knight brought a relic believed to be Christ's blood from Constantinople in 1271, establishing a chapel at the site. This arrival transformed the location into a pilgrimage destination that later warranted the construction of the Gothic church.

The Gothic church at the village center draws pilgrims seeking the sacred relic kept within its walls. This religious focus shapes how locals and visitors experience the place, creating a sense of spiritual importance that remains woven into daily life.

A high alpine road connects the village to the Salzburg region, offering access to hiking trails and winter sports. Visitors should prepare for changeable mountain weather and bring sturdy footwear for exploring the surroundings.

A reconstructed mining village demonstrates extraction methods used over several centuries, and visitors can pan for gold in local streams. This hands-on experience offers a window into how residents historically earned their living in this alpine setting.
