Stausee Margaritze, lake in Austria
Stausee Margaritze is a reservoir in the Austrian Alps, close to the village of Heiligenblut. It sits at over 6,200 feet (about 1,900 meters) and is encircled by mountain peaks, with the water held back by a concrete dam.
The reservoir was built in the mid-20th century as part of a hydroelectric project to generate power for the region. The dam and infrastructure remain in active use today.
The reservoir has been woven into local rural life for generations as a place for quiet reflection and everyday use. Its simple, natural character shows how the community relates to water and the surrounding landscape for both practical needs and leisure.
The reservoir is reached directly from the Grossglockner High Alpine Road, with a parking area close to the water. The road is generally open from late spring through autumn and closed in winter.
The reservoir sits along the route to the Grossglockner, the highest peak in Austria, making it a natural first stop for visitors on the alpine road. The water feeds an underground power station built into the rock below the dam.
