Wilhelm-Swarovski-Beobachtungswarte, Glass observation tower and museum in Heiligenblut, Austria.
The Wilhelm-Swarovski-Beobachtungswarte is an observation tower with museum facilities at 2410 meters elevation, equipped with powerful telescopes for watching ibexes, marmots, and other alpine animals. Inside, spaces display information about the wildlife and plant life found throughout the Hohe Tauern National Park.
The tower opened in 1998 with support from the Swarovski family of Innsbruck, marking a new approach to nature observation in the Austrian Alps. The project grew from the desire to bring the mountain world closer to visitors while sharing knowledge about alpine environments.
The place shows how people observe and connect with alpine wildlife, using the vantage point to understand the mountains around them. The displays inside help visitors see the relationship between the animals living here and their environment.
The tower is reached via the Grossglockner High Alpine Road, a toll road with stopping points and facilities along the way. Weather and altitude conditions can change quickly, so proper gear and caution are important for your visit.
The building blends glass and wood in a shape resembling a mountain crystal, positioned with a direct view of the Grossglockner peak. This crystal form reflects the Swarovski family's legacy in a subtle architectural way.
