Edelweißspitze

Edelweißspitze is a mountain summit located along the Grossglockner High Alpine Road in the Glockner Group of the High Tauern range. The peak serves as a major waypoint on this renowned scenic route that winds through the Alpine landscape.

The mountain was previously known by several names including Poneck and Leitenkogel before the Grossglockner High Alpine Road was constructed. The development of road access transformed the peak into a landmark on this major Alpine passage.

The summit serves as a connection point between the towns of Rauris and Fusch an der Großglocknerstraße, representing an important landmark for local communities.

The summit is accessed via the Edelweißstraße, a branch road from the Grossglockner High Alpine Road that climbs to the highest accessible point along the scenic route. The final approach involves steep sections and demands careful attention from visitors.

The final climb to the peak features cobblestone paving with gradients steeper than 12 percent, creating an unusually challenging approach. This rough surface adds a distinctive physical test to the ascent for both cyclists and drivers.
