Klagenfurter Hütte, Mountain hut in Feistritz im Rosental, Austria
Klagenfurter Hütte is a mountain hut on the Matschacher Alm in the Karawanken range in Austria, with open views toward the Rosental valley and the surrounding peaks. It offers sleeping rooms and a staffed dining area for hikers and climbers passing through.
The hut was built in 1906 by the Austrian Alpine Club, making it one of the older shelters in the Karawanken. In 1997 it received the Environmental Quality Seal awarded by the Alpine Club for sustainable management of mountain huts.
The hut sits on the Matschacher Alm and draws visitors from both the Rosental valley and nearby Slovenia, reflecting the cross-border character of the Karawanken region. In the evenings, guests gather in the wood-heated dining rooms to share meals and talk after a day on the trails.
The hut is open from April through October and can be reached on foot via marked trails from the valley. Guests are asked to bring their own sleeping bag, and there are designated indoor spaces for dogs.
The hut is a favored starting point for the ascent of Hochstuhl, the highest peak in the Karawanken, via secured via ferrata routes. The summit sits exactly on the border between Austria and Slovenia, so reaching the top means standing in two countries at once.
