Nock Mountains, Mountain range in Carinthia, Salzburg, and Styria, Austria.
The Nock Mountains form the western section of the Gurktal Alps and feature grass-covered peaks, with the highest point at 2441 meters on Eisenhut. The range spreads across Carinthia, Salzburg, and Styria, offering rounded summits and lush green slopes throughout.
The Nock Mountains gained road access in 1979 with the construction of the Nockalm Road, which connected the valleys of Krems and Reichenau for the first time. Later, in 1987, the Carinthian government designated the area as a national park to protect the natural landscape.
The name Nock comes from local Alpine language and refers to the dome-shaped summits visible throughout this mountain range. These rounded forms define the landscape and are typical of the region.
The Nockalm Road lets visitors drive through the mountains and reach various viewpoints and trails throughout the range. Access from Reichenau in the east and the Krems Valley in the west serves as the main entry and exit points for vehicles.
The range contains eight geographical subgroups, with Rosennock at 2440 meters standing as the highest point in Carinthia itself. This makes it a sought-after destination for hikers wanting to reach the highest summit within the state.
