Gaisberg Transmitter, Broadcasting station on Gaisberg mountain near Salzburg, Austria.
The Gaisberg Transmitter is a radio and television broadcasting facility on the Gaisberg, a mountain just outside Salzburg, Austria. Several antennas stand at the summit and send signals across a large part of eastern Austria.
The station opened in 1956 as Austria's first major postwar broadcasting facility, replacing a temporary setup from 1953 that had limited reach. Building on the summit gave the new installation a much wider coverage than its predecessor.
Programs like Österreich 1 and Radio Maria are broadcast from this station every day, making it part of the daily routine for people across the region. The antennas are clearly visible from the mountain and stand as a reminder of how much of everyday life depends on this kind of infrastructure.
The station sits at the top of the Gaisberg, which is easy to reach from Salzburg, but access to the facility itself may be restricted. It is worth checking current conditions before heading up.
Since 1998, ALDIS has operated a lightning research station at the site, collecting data from direct strikes to the tower. The mountain's exposed position makes it one of the few places in Austria where this kind of measurement can be taken regularly.
