Widdersteinhütte, Mountain hut in Vorarlberg, Austria
Widdersteinhütte is a mountain shelter in Vorarlberg sitting at 2009 meters (6591 feet) on the south side of Großer Widderstein. The facility provides overnight stays for about 20 people in shared sleeping areas with meals prepared on site.
The shelter was built to provide mountaineers and hikers with a safe stopping point in the Allgäu region. Over the decades it grew into an important resting place along alpine hiking routes across this mountain area.
The shelter maintains Austrian mountain traditions through regional cooking and welcoming hospitality that brings hikers and climbers together. Visitors share simple sleeping spaces and experience a straightforward way of communal life high in the peaks.
The shelter is open from early June through mid-October and requires advance booking for overnight stays. Breakfast is included with accommodation, and visitors should expect simple conditions and compact shared spaces.
Wild ibexes live in the rocky cliffs around the shelter, making it a special location for watching these mountain animals in their natural setting. The direct trail to the Widderstein summit offers climbers and determined hikers an exciting challenge they won't find from lower elevations.
