Baumgartnerhaus, Mountain hut in Reichenau an der Rax, Austria.
Baumgartnerhaus is a mountain refuge at 1447 meters altitude on the northern side of Krummbachsattel offering shelter for hikers and mountaineers. The facility features multiple wings with numerous sleeping areas and dining facilities to serve visitors.
Georg Baumgartner founded the original inn in 1839, which burned down in 1850 and was rebuilt with stone construction. The Austrian Tourist Club acquired the property in 1872 and expanded it further.
The hut served early mountaineering in the region by offering guide services to those seeking to climb surrounding peaks. It became a gathering point for travelers crossing the mountains over many decades.
A rack railway built in 1897 connects the valley with Baumgartner station, making the hut accessible by a short walk from there. Visitors should prepare for changing mountain weather and bring appropriate gear.
During the 1950s, the hut offered up to 200 sleeping places including emergency accommodations on straw beds. This capacity reflected the site's popularity among mountain hikers and alpinists of that era.
