St Andrew's Kirk, Launceston

St Andrew's Kirk, Launceston, church in Tasmania, Australia

St Andrew's Kirk is a Gothic Revival church built from local sandstone and brick, featuring a tall stone spire and pointed arches that reach toward the sky. The interior displays high ceilings, wooden pews, and stained glass windows that add quiet beauty to the space.

The church was founded in 1850 when its foundation stone was laid by Lieutenant-Governor Denison, who buried a time capsule containing newspapers and coins beneath it. Late 1800s and early 1900s earthquakes damaged the spire and cracked walls, but the community repaired the building and it endured.

St Andrew's Kirk served as a gathering place for Scottish settlers who established their community here more than 170 years ago. Today, the church continues to host regular services and community events where visitors can experience how this building remains central to local life and identity.

The church is located in a central area of Launceston and is easily accessible on foot from the main streets. Regular services, concerts, and community events take place throughout the year, so check ahead for timing if you wish to attend gatherings.

A time capsule was buried beneath the foundation stone in 1849 containing newspapers and coins that reveal what daily life was like in the town at that time. This hidden archive offers a fascinating window into Launceston's past and shows how early residents thought about the future.
