Woolmers Estate, Historic house in Longford, Tasmania
Woolmers Estate is a large colonial property in Tasmania featuring a main homestead, workers' cottages, chapel, blacksmith shop, stables, and one of Australia's oldest wool sheds. The main house shows Italianate design, and the entire site preserves original colonial-era buildings and their furnishings.
The property was founded in 1817 by Thomas Archer and remained under family ownership for six generations until 1994. This continuous family stewardship meant that most original structures and contents were preserved rather than altered or removed.
The layout reflects how colonial society was organized, with separate spaces for owners, workers, and those assigned to labor on the property. Walking through these buildings shows you the daily divisions and relationships that shaped life on the land.
The estate is open Wednesday through Sunday, offering both guided tours and self-guided exploration of the buildings. Six colonial cottages are available for overnight stays if you want to experience the property more thoroughly.
The estate contains personal collections from all six generations of the Archer family, including furniture, clothing, photographs, and everyday objects. These collections offer an unusual window into daily life spanning more than a century.
