Imishli District

Imishli is an administrative district in central Azerbaijan that spreads across extensive lowlands, with parts lying below sea level. The Kura River forms its northern boundary, and the Aras River flows through its central area.

The district was founded in 1930 as Qaradonlu during the Soviet period and quickly became an agricultural center. Construction of the first Machine-Tractor Plant in 1933 marked a turning point in its development.

Ancient settlements shaped this region for thousands of years, as Bronze Age sites reveal traces of early communities. The land has held human presence through many periods.

The area includes a network of schools and services spread throughout for local communities. When visiting, pay attention to the flat terrain and the two river courses that shape the surroundings.

Sarysu, Azerbaijan's largest natural lake, is partially located here and extends into neighboring territory. The lake stands out as a notable feature that shapes the character of the flat landscape.
