Kalakhana Mausoleums, Medieval mausoleums in Shamakhi District, Azerbaijan
The Kalakhana Mausoleums are eight stone tombs built in the Shirvan-Absheron architectural style and scattered across an open site. Some have portal entrances with surrounding walls, while others stand alone without enclosures on the land.
The mausoleums were constructed during the early modern period when local builders had mastered the regional building techniques. Inscriptions found on some tombs document burials from the 17th century and reveal details about those interred.
These tombs represent local Islamic burial traditions and social customs from medieval times. The different sizes and decorative styles show how people expressed status and faith through their final resting places.
The site requires walking across open ground to see all the tombs, so wear appropriate footwear and allow time to move between the structures. The terrain is exposed, so visit on a day with good weather and bring sun protection if needed.
One tomb stands out because it contains five separate graves within a single structure, an unusual feature for this burial ground. This suggests the building was designed to hold multiple family members in one place.
