Friday Mosque of Shamakhi

The Juma Mosque features three halls with a central dome, two flanking minarets, and balconies constructed using local boxwood beams and iron wood materials.

Maslamah ibn Abd al-Malik established this mosque in 743, making it one of the earliest Islamic structures built in the Caucasus region after the Derbent mosque.

The mosque exemplifies the Shirvan-Absheron architectural school through its structural elements, which influenced religious buildings throughout the medieval Caucasus region.

The mosque maintains regular prayer schedules and welcomes visitors outside prayer times, with guided tours available to explain its architectural and historical elements.

The building survived multiple earthquakes in 1607, 1669, 1859, and 1902, demonstrating the effectiveness of its robust construction methods and materials.
