Shamakhy Astrophysical Observatory

Shamakhy Astrophysical Observatory is an astronomical research facility positioned high in Azerbaijan's mountains. The site contains multiple telescopes, including a large German-made instrument, used for observing celestial objects and conducting research.

The facility began operations in the 1960s after researchers spent years identifying the most suitable mountain location in Azerbaijan for astronomical work. The main telescope was installed later that decade and has shaped the observatory's research since then.

The two-meter telescope was manufactured by Carl Zeiss and installed in the 1960s, making it one of the older large instruments of its kind in the region. This device has enabled astronomical discoveries with the same optical components for decades.
