Shamakhy Astrophysical Observatory

Located at an elevation of 1500 meters in the Greater Caucasus Mountains, the Shamakhy observatory contains multiple telescopes for astronomical research and celestial observations.

The observatory started operations in 1960 following extensive research during the 1950s to identify the most suitable location for astronomical observations in Azerbaijan.

Named after Nasreddin Tusi, a 13th-century Azerbaijani astronomer, the facility represents a connection between modern research and the country's astronomical traditions.

The facility maintains about 180 clear nights annually and provides guided tours, educational programs, and opportunities to use telescopes for astronomical observations.

The observatory houses a notable two-meter telescope manufactured by Carl Zeiss, which was installed in 1966 and remains instrumental in astronomical research.
