Šargan Eight, Heritage railway in Mokra Gora, Serbia.
Šargan Eight is a narrow-gauge heritage railway in Mokra Gora that winds through mountainous terrain in a figure-eight pattern. The tracks climb 300 meters and cross the same location at different elevations while passing through tunnels and bridges along the route.
Construction began in 1921 to link Belgrade with Sarajevo, using labor from Russian and Italian prisoners of war. This railway grew from a need to improve transport connections between the two cities in the years following World War I.
The restored wooden carriages with traditional stoves show early 20th-century railway craftsmanship. Passengers experience the working methods and style of that era directly during the journey.
Wear sturdy footwear since the stations sit at different elevations and some paths are steep. Travel is most enjoyable in clear weather when views of the surrounding hills are best.
The route passes through 22 tunnels and crosses 10 bridges, allowing passengers to traverse the same hillside twice at different heights. This engineering solution lets steep slopes be conquered without making the line excessively long.
