Zaovine Lake, Reservoir in Tara National Park, Serbia.
Zaovine Lake is a reservoir in Tara National Park located at an elevation of 892 meters and spanning around 15 square kilometers. The water body contains five bays with depths reaching up to 110 meters and serves as an important water storage resource for the region.
The reservoir was created by building a 125-meter dam across the Beli Rzav river, with construction taking place between 1975 and 1983. This dam project transformed the river valley into a hydroelectric water storage system.
The lake holds significance in Serbian folklore through the Prophecy from Kremna, which mentioned water bodies forming in this region. This connection to local tradition shapes how people today understand and relate to the place.
The lake water requires minimal treatment for drinking purposes, making it a valuable resource for surrounding communities. Visitors should know that the mountainous location remains accessible year-round, though road conditions can become more challenging during winter months.
A solar power station called Brana Lazići operates near the dam, combining solar energy generation with water management. This modern facility shows how the site today uses renewable sources and is not solely dependent on hydroelectric power.
